Trichomonas: Symptoms, Testing and Treatment
What Is Trichomonas?
Trichomonas, also known as Trichomoniasis or “Trich”, is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a single-celled parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. This organism can live in vaginal secretions or semen.
In women, it commonly infects the vagina and urethra. In men, it may affect the urethra, penile head, and even the prostate gland.
How Is Trichomonas Transmitted?
Trichomonas is usually spread through unprotected vaginal sex with an infected partner. Although it is possible to contract it through anal or oral sex, these forms of transmission are considered less common.
You can also catch Trichomonas from:
-
Sharing unwashed sex toys
-
Sexual contact without barrier protection
It cannot be passed on through:
-
Kissing or hugging
-
Sharing towels, toilets, or eating utensils
Symptoms of Trichomonas in Men and Women
Many people infected with Trichomonas do not notice any symptoms, which means the infection can easily go unnoticed and untreated. If symptoms develop, they usually appear within four weeks.
In women:
-
Frothy or thin vaginal discharge (often yellow-green)
-
Unpleasant “fishy” smell
-
Itching or soreness in the vaginal area
-
Pain during sex or urination
-
Vaginal inflammation (vaginitis)
In men:
-
Painful urination or ejaculation
-
Frequent urge to urinate
-
Thin white penile discharge
-
Redness or swelling of the penile head (balanitis)
-
Discomfort around the foreskin (balano-posthitis)
Did You Know?
While Trichomonas is relatively rare in the UK (around 6,000 cases annually), it is actually the most widespread non-viral STI globally, with over 280 million cases reported each year.
How Is Trichomonas Diagnosed?
At ManaPlus, testing for Trichomonas is simple, fast, and confidential. We offer:
-
Urine testing for all genders
-
Swab testing for women (if preferred)
Trichomonas is also included in our Comfort Screen and Platinum Screen. Results are typically ready within 5 working days of sample receipt at our lab.
What Happens If Trichomonas Goes Untreated?
If not treated, Trichomonas can increase your chances of getting or spreading other STIs, including HIV.
For women, untreated Trichomonas during pregnancy can lead to:
-
Premature labour
-
Low birth weight babies
For men, there is a small risk of developing prostatitis, a painful prostate infection.
What If I Test Positive for Trichomonas?
Trichomonas is typically treated with a short course of antibiotics, often metronidazole or tinidazole.
ManaPlus can support you with:
-
A prescription for treatment
-
Or referral to your own GP or local sexual health clinic
If you tested positive using a home test, we can arrange a private consultation with a doctor, who will:
-
Review your results
-
Discuss your diagnosis
-
Prescribe the appropriate antibiotic
You should avoid sexual activity until treatment is complete and symptoms are fully resolved. It is important that any recent sexual partner(s) are also tested and treated to prevent re-infection.
