Mycoplasma: Symptoms, Testing and Treatment

What Is Mycoplasma?

Mycoplasma is a type of bacteria that can infect the genital area, urinary tract, rectum, and even the lungs in both men and women. The most relevant strain for sexual health is Mycoplasma genitalium. It’s estimated that around 2% of adults may carry this infection.

Although Mycoplasma is classified as a sexually transmitted infection (STI), it can also be found in healthy individuals without symptoms. Its long-term effects are still being studied, and treatment is not yet universally standardised.

How Is Mycoplasma Transmitted?

Mycoplasma is mainly passed through unprotected vaginal or anal sex. It’s less likely to be transmitted through oral sex. Risk factors include:

  • Having multiple sexual partners

  • Being under 25 or in older male age groups

  • Being a smoker

In men, Mycoplasma typically infects the urethra (the tube inside the penis).
In women, it may affect the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes.

In the UK:

  • 7% of men who have sex with men are estimated to carry Mycoplasma

  • HIV-positive individuals are more likely to be infected

  • Around 3% of young women may also carry the bacteria

What Are the Symptoms of Mycoplasma?

Most people with Mycoplasma show no symptoms, but when they do appear, they can vary by gender.

In women:

  • Abnormal vaginal discharge

  • Pain during intercourse

  • Pelvic pain

  • Bleeding after sex

  • Spotting between periods

In men:

  • Burning sensation when urinating

  • Discharge from the penis

  • Irritation or soreness of the urethra

Did You Know?

If untreated, Mycoplasma can lead to serious complications similar to those caused by Chlamydia, including infertility

How Is Mycoplasma Tested?

If you suspect exposure within the last six months—or if a partner has tested positive—you should get tested, even without symptoms.

Testing for Mycoplasma at ManaPlus is simple and discreet:

  • We require a urine sample

  • Results are typically ready within five working days

  • Testing is available as part of our Comfort Screen, Full Screen, or Platinum Screen

What Are the Risks of Untreated Mycoplasma?

Left untreated, Mycoplasma can cause a range of complications.

In women:

  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

  • Infertility due to damage to reproductive organs

  • Reactive arthritis (a form of joint inflammation)

  • Pregnancy complications like miscarriage, premature birth, or stillbirth

In men:

  • Epididymitis (inflammation of the tube that stores sperm)

  • Painful or swollen testicles

  • Sexually related reactive arthritis

What Happens If I Test Positive?

Mycoplasma is treatable with a specific course of antibiotics. If your test result is positive:

  • ManaPlus can provide a prescription or refer you to your GP or local sexual health service

  • It’s important to complete your treatment and abstain from sexual activity for at least two weeks

  • You may wish to have a follow-up test to confirm the infection has cleared

  • Partner notification is essential, as they may also need testing and treatment

If you used a home testing kit, we can arrange a private consultation with one of our doctors. They’ll discuss your results and guide you through the appropriate next steps.
