HIV Counselling and Consent
When booking an HIV test or a test bundle that includes HIV screening with ManaPlus, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to the information outlined on this page. By proceeding, you give your informed consent to be tested for HIV and any other included sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Please review the information carefully. This includes watching our HIV testing and consent video (if provided). Your consent ensures that testing can proceed and, where necessary, results can be shared confidentially with medical professionals to support your care.
What is HIV?
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that weakens the immune system by targeting and destroying CD4 cells—a type of white blood cell that plays a key role in defending the body against infection. If left untreated, HIV can lead to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), where the immune system is unable to fight off serious infections.
There are two strains of HIV:
-
HIV-1 (the most common globally)
-
HIV-2 (less common, but still impactful)
HIV is transmitted through infected blood, semen, vaginal fluids, pre-ejaculate, and breast milk. The virus spreads primarily through unprotected sexual contact, sharing needles, or during childbirth and breastfeeding in cases where the mother is HIV-positive and untreated.
HIV is not transmitted through kissing, saliva, sweat, urine, sharing utensils, or using toilets, swimming pools, or bathtubs.
Why Should I Get Tested?
Knowing your HIV status is essential for both your health and that of your partners. Early detection means earlier access to life-saving treatment, which greatly improves health outcomes and prevents long-term immune system damage. Regular testing is especially important if you’ve had unprotected sex, shared injecting equipment, or are unsure of a partner’s status.
HIV Tests Available at ManaPlus
ManaPlus offers two leading HIV tests:
-
HIV DUO Test (4th Generation)
-
Detects HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies and the p24 antigen
-
Over 99% accurate at 28 days post-exposure
-
Highly reliable and widely recommended
-
-
HIV RNA PCR Test (Early Detection)
-
Detects the genetic material (RNA) of the HIV virus itself
-
Can identify infection as early as 10 days after exposure
-
Recommended if testing shortly after a potential exposure
-
Why Can’t I Get Tested Immediately After Exposure?
All HIV tests have a window period—a timeframe after infection during which the virus or antibodies may not be detectable. Testing during this period may lead to false-negative results.
-
RNA PCR Test: 10-day window
-
4th Gen HIV DUO Test: 28-day window
Testing too early can lead to uncertainty, so follow-up tests may be advised to confirm results.
What if My HIV Test is Negative?
A negative result means that no signs of HIV were found in your sample. However, if your test was taken before the end of the window period, you should consider a follow-up test at 90 days post-exposure to be fully certain.
What if My HIV Test is Positive?
If your initial test is positive:
-
ManaPlus will conduct confirmatory testing to ensure accuracy
-
You may need to provide a second blood sample
-
We will arrange a referral to a specialist HIV care provider
You will be supported every step of the way, including guidance on telling your sexual partners, so they can also be tested and treated if necessary. This is vital to reduce further transmission.
What is PEP?
If you think you’ve recently been exposed to HIV—through unprotected sex, needle injury, or a condom failure—you may be eligible for PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis).
-
Must be started within 72 hours of exposure
-
Course lasts 28 days
-
Significantly reduces your risk of infection
Contact ManaPlus or a healthcare provider immediately to explore this option.
Reducing the Risk of HIV
While HIV cannot currently be cured, it is entirely preventable. To reduce your risk:
-
Always use a new, undamaged condom during sex
-
Do not share injecting equipment
-
Get tested regularly, especially if you’re sexually active with new or multiple partners
Practising safe sex and avoiding high-risk behaviours are key to protecting yourself and others.
