Gardnerella: Symptoms, Testing and Treatment

What Is Gardnerella?

Gardnerella is a type of bacteria that can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina, leading to a condition known as bacterial vaginosis (BV). While it primarily affects women, it can occasionally be transmitted to men through sexual contact.

Although BV is most often linked to sexual activity, it can still occur in women who have never had sex. If you suspect you may have BV, it is important to get tested and seek advice.

How Can Gardnerella Be Transmitted?

Gardnerella is typically spread during sexual activity, especially between female partners or from women to men. The possibility of male-to-female transmission has not yet been confirmed.

The bacterial imbalance that causes BV can occur due to:

  • A new sexual partner

  • Not using protection

  • Hormonal changes

  • Changing soaps or hygiene products

  • Use of certain contraceptives

What Are the Symptoms of Gardnerella/Bacterial Vaginosis?

Many people with Gardnerella do not show symptoms. When they do, symptoms may differ for men and women.

In women:

  • Unusual watery vaginal discharge (grey, yellow, or green)

  • A fishy odour, especially after sex

  • Itching or burning during urination

This discharge is often thinner and more watery than what is seen with thrush.

In men:

  • Mild burning or itching during urination

  • General discomfort in the urinary tract or around the penis

Did You Know?

Gardnerella can increase your risk of developing other STIs and cause complications during pregnancy, even if no symptoms are present.

How Can Gardnerella Be Tested?

At ManaPlus, testing for Gardnerella is quick, painless, and discreet. You can either:

  • Provide a urine sample

  • Or get tested as part of our Comfort Screen or Platinum Screen

What Happens If Gardnerella Goes Untreated?

Untreated Gardnerella can lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) in women and raise your chances of contracting STIs like HIV, Gonorrhoea, or Chlamydia.

In pregnancy, untreated BV may result in:

  • Premature labour

  • Early delivery

  • Postpartum complications

In men, Gardnerella usually clears on its own and rarely causes serious issues.

What If I Test Positive for Gardnerella?

Gardnerella infections can sometimes resolve without treatment. However, if you experience symptoms or are trying to conceive, it is advisable to treat the infection with a short course of antibiotics.

At ManaPlus, we can:

  • Provide you with a prescription

  • Or refer you to your GP or local sexual health clinic

We also offer private consultations for those who test positive through a home test kit. Simply call our team to schedule a confidential appointment.

It’s also a good idea to inform recent partners, as they may need testing too.
