PEP and PrEP
PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) and PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) are two effective prevention strategies for reducing your risk of HIV infection. Both treatments are available to people of all genders and are used at different times depending on your risk or exposure level.
-
PEP is taken after a potential exposure to HIV.
-
PrEP is taken before any possible exposure to help prevent infection.
These medications are not treatments for those who are already HIV positive.
What is PEP?
PEP is a short-term emergency course of medication taken after potential exposure to HIV. It works by preventing the virus from establishing itself in the body.
Key facts about PEP:
-
Must be started within 72 hours of exposure—ideally within 24 hours.
-
The full course lasts 28 days.
-
Prescribed by a doctor only.
-
Highly effective if taken correctly and completed.
-
Does not protect against other STIs.
PEP is often used after high-risk situations such as unprotected sex, sharing needles, or sexual assault. If you do not finish the full course, it may not be effective.
Testing After PEP
Once your PEP treatment is complete, it’s essential to get tested for HIV to confirm your status.
ManaPlus recommends:
-
HIV RNA PCR test (Early Detection) – 10 days after completing PEP
-
Instant HIV Test – 26 days after finishing PEP
-
HIV DUO Test – from 28 days post-PEP
If you believe you were exposed to HIV, it’s possible you were exposed to other infections too. Consider the ManaPlus Platinum STI Screen to ensure your overall sexual health.
What is PrEP?
PrEP is a preventive treatment taken before potential exposure to HIV. It is highly effective in reducing your risk of contracting the virus during sex.
Key facts about PrEP:
-
Taken daily or “on demand” based on medical guidance.
-
Available on the NHS in Scotland and Wales and by private prescription in England.
-
Most commonly used by HIV-negative individuals with HIV-positive partners or those at high risk.
-
PrEP does not protect against other STIs.
-
Regular STI testing is recommended—ideally every 3 months.
If you’re on PrEP, you usually won’t need PEP even if exposed to HIV—provided you’ve taken the medication correctly.
Protecting Yourself Against HIV
HIV is still a major public health concern in the UK, with around 6,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Certain groups, including Black African communities and men who have sex with men (MSM), remain at higher risk. Over 10,000 people in the UK are estimated to be living with HIV without knowing it.
Regular testing and preventive treatments like PrEP and PEP play a critical role in reducing these numbers.
