Implant Removal

If you’ve decided that your contraceptive implant is no longer right for you, ManaPlus offers a fast and confidential removal service. Our trained clinicians are here to support you with a safe, comfortable removal process at a clinic near you.

What is the contraceptive implant?

The contraceptive implant is a small, flexible rod placed just under the skin of your upper arm. It releases progesterone, a hormone that:

  • Prevents the release of an egg (ovulation)

  • Thickens cervical mucus to block sperm

  • May stop a fertilised egg from implanting in the uterus

The implant is effective for up to three years, making it a popular long-term contraception option.

Why choose removal?

Reasons for removal vary. You may:

  • Be experiencing side effects

  • Want to switch to another contraceptive method

  • Be ready to start a family

  • No longer wish to use hormonal contraception

The implant can be removed at any point in your cycle, and fertility returns quickly after removal.

Preparing for Removal

If you do not want to become pregnant:

  • Avoid unprotected sex in the 7 days before removal

  • Use a barrier method (e.g., condoms) if you are sexually active

Sperm can survive for up to 7 days and may fertilise an egg once the implant is removed.

How is the implant removed?

The procedure is quick and typically takes just a few minutes:

  1. Your clinician will locate the implant in your arm

  2. The skin will be cleaned and numbed with local anaesthetic

  3. A small incision will be made

  4. The implant is gently pushed out and removed with forceps

  5. A bandage is applied to close and protect the area

In some cases, if the implant cannot be felt, an ultrasound may be needed to find it.

Aftercare Instructions

  • Keep the bandage dry for at least 3 days

  • Monitor the site for any signs of infection or discomfort

  • Contact us if you have concerns about healing or side effects
