Zika Virus: Symptoms and Testing
What is the Zika Virus?
Zika is a viral infection that can affect human stem cells and brain cells, potentially leading to serious health complications. The virus is most commonly found in regions such as Central and South America, the Caribbean, Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and some parts of the Pacific. While Zika is not naturally present in the UK, it can be brought back by individuals who have recently travelled abroad.
How is Zika Transmitted?
The primary route of transmission is through mosquito bites, especially in areas where the virus is widespread. Once inside the body, the virus replicates and can be passed to another host through various means:
-
Sexual contact: Zika has been found in semen and can be sexually transmitted from men to women.
-
Pregnancy: An infected pregnant woman can pass the virus to her unborn baby.
While research into Zika transmission is ongoing, the safest way to assess your risk is to get tested, especially after travelling to a high-risk region or showing symptoms.
Symptoms of Zika Virus in Men and Women
Approximately 80% of those infected show no symptoms. When symptoms do appear, they are often mild and may include:
-
Skin rash
-
Joint and muscle pain
-
Conjunctivitis (red eyes)
-
Fever or headache (less common)
>> Did you know?
Zika virus can be passed from a pregnant woman to her unborn baby, causing severe congenital disabilities, such as microcephaly, which affects brain development.
How Can You Test for Zika?
ManaPlus offers two types of Zika testing depending on when you may have been exposed:
-
Urine Test – Recommended if symptoms appeared within the last 2 weeks
-
Results: Available in up to 14 working days after the lab receives your sample
-
-
Blood Test – Suitable if your potential exposure occurred more than a week ago
-
Results: Also available in 14 working days
-

Risks of Untreated Zika Infection
While Zika is often asymptomatic, it poses a serious risk during pregnancy. If left undiagnosed or untreated:
-
It can cause microcephaly, where the baby’s brain and skull do not fully develop
-
This may lead to life-limiting conditions or premature death
Is There a Cure for Zika?
There is currently no antiviral treatment specifically for Zika. Supportive care is advised:
-
Stay hydrated
-
Use pain relief medications (e.g. paracetamol) to manage symptoms
-
Rest and avoid mosquito bites to prevent spreading the virus
