Ureaplasma: Symptoms, Testing and Treatment

What Is Ureaplasma?

Ureaplasma is a naturally occurring bacteria found in the urinary, reproductive, and respiratory tracts of both men and women. While it can be passed through sexual contact, it is not always classified as a traditional sexually transmitted infection (STI).

In some cases, Ureaplasma can grow in excess and trigger irritation, inflammation, and more serious health concerns. It is highly contagious, and those infected are often at a greater risk of acquiring other STIs. A comprehensive STI screen is strongly recommended.

How Is Ureaplasma Transmitted?

Ureaplasma is especially common among those who are sexually active. The bacteria can spread through unprotected vaginal or anal sex.

In pregnant women, Ureaplasma can be transmitted to the baby during pregnancy or delivery. The infection may resolve on its own or require antibiotic treatment.

What Are the Symptoms of Ureaplasma?

Most people show no signs in the early stages. However, when symptoms appear, they often involve inflammation of the urethra in both men and women.

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain or burning during urination

  • Unusual discharge from the genitals

  • Redness or swelling at the site of infection

In women:

  • Watery vaginal discharge

  • Unpleasant vaginal odour

  • Lower abdominal discomfort

Early testing can prevent more serious conditions such as Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) or wider infection.

Did You Know?

Untreated Ureaplasma in pregnant women can cause complications during childbirth, including premature delivery.

What Happens If Ureaplasma Is Left Untreated?

If not diagnosed and treated early, Ureaplasma can lead to several health problems:

Possible complications include:

  • Increased risk of STIs, including HIV

  • Kidney stones

  • Infertility in women

  • Preterm labour and newborn respiratory issues

  • In rare cases: arthritis, meningitis, and pneumonia

What If I Test Positive for Ureaplasma?

Ureaplasma is usually treated effectively with a course of antibiotics. In some mild cases, the infection may clear up naturally with rest and avoidance of sexual activity.

At ManaPlus, we can provide a prescription if your test result is positive. You can:

  • Get treatment through our in-house doctors

  • Or take your results to your GP or local sexual health clinic

Once treatment begins, we recommend avoiding sexual contact for at least two weeks to prevent spreading the infection. A follow-up test can confirm that the infection has fully cleared.

You should also notify any recent partners so they can get tested and treated if needed.

If you tested at home, we can schedule a private consultation with one of our doctors to discuss your results and next steps.
