Cervical Cancer, Smear Tests & HPV Vaccination

What Is Cervical Cancer?

Cervical cancer usually develops in women aged 30 to 45. It forms in the cervix—the lower part of the womb that connects to the vagina. The condition often takes months or even years to progress and tends to affect sexually active women. Regular cervical screening is essential for early detection.

Certain high-risk types of Human Papillomavirus (HPV)—a group of more than 140 strains—are linked to cervical cancer. Of these, types 16 and 18 are most commonly involved in cancer development.

How Do You Get HPV and Cervical Cancer?

Around 99.7% of cervical cancer cases are caused by persistent high-risk HPV infections. These viruses are passed through skin-to-skin sexual contact or the exchange of body fluids. This includes unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex, and using shared sex toys.

After infection, high-risk HPV can cause normal cervical cells to mutate and multiply uncontrollably, potentially leading to cancer.

Cervical Cancer Symptoms

HPV infections often show no immediate symptoms, especially in the early stages. As the cancer progresses, the following signs may appear:

  • Vaginal bleeding between periods, after sex, or post-menopause

  • Pain during or after intercourse

  • Unusual or foul-smelling vaginal discharge

  • Pelvic or lower back pain

Advanced symptoms may include:

  • Heavy vaginal bleeding

  • Blood in your urine

  • Constipation or bowel changes

  • Swollen legs

  • Incontinence (urinary or bowel)

  • Kidney pain or extreme side pain

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to seek medical advice immediately.

Did You Know?

Over 60% of women aged 25–35 are unaware that they are at high risk of developing cervical cancer.

Testing for Cervical Cancer and HPV

At ManaPlus clinics, the first step in cervical screening is an HPV test. Research shows that HPV screening detects risk more accurately than traditional smear tests. If HPV is found, a follow-up smear (PAP) test is done using the same sample.

We offer both HPV DNA testing and cervical smear (PAP) tests at our UK clinics. A single vaginal swab is used to analyse both. You’ll get your results within three working days of the lab receiving your sample.

If your results indicate high-risk HPV or abnormal cells, we will help you access further care quickly and discreetly. If you’re experiencing symptoms, our team can book a same- or next-day doctor appointment for you.

Risks of Untreated HPV or Cervical Cancer

Delaying diagnosis and treatment can lead to severe health consequences including:

  • Advanced-stage cervical cancer

  • Early menopause

  • Swelling due to fluid buildup (lymphoedema)

  • Blood clots

  • Kidney failure

Routine screening is key to prevention and early intervention.

Treatment for HPV and Cervical Cancer

Early diagnosis gives you the best chance for successful treatment. If needed, we’ll arrange a private follow-up consultation where a specialist can guide you on the right course of care.

Not everyone who tests positive for high-risk HPV will develop cancer. Monitoring and timely intervention can prevent complications.

Treatment options may include:

  • Surgery to remove abnormal or cancerous tissues

  • Radiotherapy to target cancer cells

  • Chemotherapy (in advanced stages)

  • A combination of treatments based on disease progression
