Chlamydia: Symptoms, Testing & Treatment
What is HIV?
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that weakens the immune system by targeting and destroying essential cells that help the body fight infections. Without treatment, HIV can develop into Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), a serious condition that significantly lowers the body’s ability to combat disease. However, with early diagnosis and proper medical care, individuals living with HIV can lead healthy lives and enjoy a normal life expectancy.
According to UK health data, over 100,000 people are currently living with HIV in the UK. Around 92% are aware of their status, but 1 in 12 are unaware of their infection, highlighting the critical importance of regular HIV testing.
HIV Testing Options
At Manaplus, we offer a range of HIV testing options tailored to different stages of exposure:
-
HIV Duo Laboratory Test – Accurate from 28 days after exposure
-
HIV RNA PCR Test – Detectable as early as 10 days post-exposure
-
Rapid/Instant HIV Test – Suitable from 26 to 90 days after exposure
⚠️ If your exposure was within the past 45 days, consult your advisor to see whether a lab-based test is more appropriate.
Some employers and visa applications may require proof of HIV status. If you need a certified HIV test result, let us know when booking.
If you’ve had unprotected sex in the last 72 hours, you may be eligible for PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis)—a preventive medication that can stop the virus from taking hold. It must be started within 72 hours.
How is HIV Transmitted?
HIV can be passed through sexual and non-sexual means involving bodily fluids, including:
-
Semen
-
Pre-ejaculate (pre-cum)
-
Vaginal fluids (including menstrual blood)
-
Blood
-
Breast milk
-
Rectal mucous membranes
The virus is most commonly transmitted through unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex with an infected person. Although the risk of oral transmission is low, it is still possible.
HIV is not spread through air, water, saliva, sweat, tears, insect bites, or by touching unbroken skin.
What Are the Signs and Symptoms of HIV?
HIV symptoms may not appear immediately after infection. When they do, they typically appear within 4–6 weeks and can include:
-
Fever or flu-like symptoms
-
Sore throat
-
Swollen lymph nodes
This period is known as seroconversion, where the body begins producing antibodies to fight the virus.
After this stage, symptoms may disappear for several years, but the virus continues to damage the immune system. Without treatment, more serious symptoms may appear as immunity declines:
Common late-stage symptoms:
-
Unexplained weight loss
-
Chronic diarrhoea
-
Frequent infections (e.g., chest infections)
-
Skin rashes on the face, genitals, or anus
-
Recurrent oral/genital thrush or herpes
-
Night sweats
-
Fatigue
-
Nausea or appetite loss
-
Swollen lymph glands in the neck, armpits, or groin
If you’ve had unprotected sex or shared needles, or received a blood transfusion outside the UK, it’s wise to get tested.
How Is HIV Detected?
Knowing your HIV status early gives you the best chance to manage your health. Testing is simple and can be done at our clinic or from home. Tests include:
-
A blood draw from the arm
-
A finger-prick sample using a lancet
Many of our clinics offer instant HIV results in about 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can order a home test kit online.

Risks of Untreated HIV
If untreated, HIV reduces CD4 cells, weakening the immune system and increasing vulnerability to infections and serious illnesses. If allowed to progress, the condition can result in AIDS, which can be life-threatening.
Pregnant women with HIV can pass the virus to their babies during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding. However, routine testing and treatment during pregnancy in the UK greatly reduce this risk.
What If I Test Positive?
Being HIV-positive is not a death sentence. With modern medication, you can control the virus and protect your health. You can choose to receive ongoing care privately or through the NHS.
