HPV & Genital Warts: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments
Understanding Genital Warts
Genital warts are a visible sign of a highly common STI in the UK, caused by certain strains of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). With over 140 different types of HPV, some can cause harmless warts, while others are linked to cancers of the cervix, penis, anus, vagina, and vulva.

HPV strains that spread through sexual contact fall into two main types:
-
Low-risk HPV: Not linked to cancer but often cause genital or anal warts. Types 6 and 11 are responsible for 90% of these cases. ManaPlus tests for 9 low-risk HPV strains.
-
High-risk HPV: These strains can potentially lead to cancer. Types 16 and 18 are responsible for most HPV-related cancers. ManaPlus screens for 19 high-risk types.
How is Genital HPV Transmitted?
HPV is spread through intimate skin-to-skin contact, most commonly during unprotected vaginal or anal sex. It may also be passed via shared sex toys or, less commonly, oral sex. However, it cannot be transmitted through everyday contact like kissing, sharing cutlery, towels, or using toilet seats.
Signs and Symptoms of Genital Warts and HPV
Most HPV infections show no signs. If symptoms appear, they typically involve small red or pink warts, which may look like a cauliflower or raspberry and appear in or around the genital or anal area.
Did You Know?
While HPV itself can’t be cured, genital warts can be treated by your healthcare provider. During pregnancy, these warts can become larger and may complicate vaginal delivery.
HPV & Genital Warts Testing Options
Testing varies for men and women:
-
Women: A cervical smear test (PAP smear) combined with HPV screening is recommended. This dual test detects the virus and checks for abnormal cells.
-
Men: A swab is taken from a visible wart or from areas like the urethra or anus, depending on symptoms. Your doctor will guide you.
Results are typically available within three working days. You can monitor progress in your secure patient dashboard. Our advisors will inform you once your full report is ready.
Risks of Untreated Genital Warts or HPV
Leaving an HPV infection untreated increases your risk of contracting other STIs, including HIV. It can also lead to precancerous changes that, over time, may develop into cancer of the cervix, penis, or anus.
For pregnant women, untreated warts may grow larger due to hormonal changes and interfere with delivery. In rare cases, the virus can be passed to the baby, potentially causing serious complications like respiratory papillomatosis, a condition where warts grow in the infant’s throat.
What If You Test Positive for HPV or Genital Warts?
If your test returns positive, ManaPlus offers private, confidential follow-up appointments to help you begin treatment promptly. You may also choose to continue care with your own GP.
Treatment options include creams, laser therapy, cryotherapy (freezing), or minor surgery to remove warts. However, these treatments target the warts—not the virus—and some individuals may clear the virus naturally over time.
We also recommend support from trusted resources like The STI Project, an online community where people share their personal journeys with HPV.
Preventing HPV and Genital Warts
At ManaPlus, we offer the HPV vaccine to protect against nine major strains, including types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58. These strains are responsible for the majority of genital warts and HPV-related cancers. The full course involves three doses given over 6–12 months, with a booster suggested every five years.
If you test positive, we’ll guide you through treatment and prevention options in complete confidence.
